Daniel did many things before he became a writer. After leaving school at fifteen, he worked in a local laundry for a year, before joining the Merchant Navy as a deck hand. He was a seaman for eleven years in all, before becoming a postman in 1974. He only left the Post Office in 1978, to enter Glasgow University as a mature student. Daniel graduated with a MA Hons (Politics and Sociology) in 1982.

Since graduation he has worked with homeless people, in housing, and finally as a college lecturer.

He started writing for television around 1983, and had his first commission from BBC Scotland in 1985. Daniel's first film was produced in 1986.

Since the early 1990s, Daniel has written orignal episodes and adapted successful novels into well known crime dramas - Morse, Taggart, Rebus and most recently the Morse spin off, Lewis.

As well as the John Paris PI books, Daniel is currently working on an episode of Lewis, which is being filmed in Oxford.
